Creating Comfort in Life's Hardest Moments

Recognizing the need for a dedicated space for families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss, Elisha Kennedy, RN, led an effort to create a bereavement room that provides comfort, privacy, and dignity during one of life's most difficult journeys. 

The room offers a peaceful environment where families can spend precious time with their baby, create meaningful memories, and begin to process their grief with the support of a compassionate care team. Thoughtfully designed to feel warm and comforting, the space allows families the privacy they deserve while navigating an incredibly personal loss. 

Kennedy's vision was inspired by a desire to ensure families facing perinatal loss receive not only exceptional clinical care but also emotional support during their time at the hospital. 

Perinatal loss is devastating," said Kennedy. "I truly believe that the way a family is cared for before they leave the hospital without their baby profoundly impacts how they begin their healing journey. Our unit has the opportunity to ensure they feel supported, seen, and compassionately cared for during one of the most difficult moments of their lives." 

Kennedy said the room reflects the team's commitment to caring for every family's emotional and physical needs. 

"To better support these families, we've created a dedicated room that offers a private, peaceful, and comforting space where they can spend precious time with their baby and begin to process their grief," Kennedy said. "Our prayer is that this environment offers a sense of dignity, comfort, and compassion, while allowing families the privacy they deserve as they create lasting memories and begin navigating life after loss." While no space can erase the pain of losing a child, the bereavement room reflects Central Carolina Hospital's commitment to ensuring that no family experiences that loss without compassion, dignity, and support.
